From the Beginning

A STORY OF "TIME" by Trevor Topsfield

What’s Important to Israel

God had set out five stages of discipline that are recorded in Leviticus 26:14-35, each one 7 times more severe than the previous, culminating in the destruction of the Nation. They are designed to bring Israel back to listening to God and obeying his commands. The book of Hebrews was written in 63AD before the 5th stage occurred in 70AD. The Jews were warned, and it required immediate attention. The 5th stage of discipline is the worst thing that could happen to Israel and when the Romans administered it they sacked Jerusalem and the price the Jews paid with their lives was unspeakable.

The writer knew of the terrible times ahead because he was aware the Church had taken over from Israel as God’s personal representatives, also the Romans had already administered the 4th stage of discipline in 63 BC when Pompey the Great occupied Jerusalem, and unless they changed their attitude the 5th could not be far away. Therefore his message was extremely urgent, but only the really important issues needed to be covered while there was still time.

Hebrews Chapter 6 names a few areas in which the Jews needed to better understand, but how important were they?

Therefore elementary issues such as acts that cause death, faith in God, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. Whoever wrote Hebrews was aware these subjects needed to be straightened out, but given the amount of time there was left before the Romans came, he needs to tackle the really pressing stuff first.

The people to whom Hebrews is addressed were believers as they have been enlightened, shared the heavenly gifts, shared in the Holy Spirit, and tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the coming age. The receivers of this message are possessors of the salvation from God just as much as any other believer. However this group was in a precarious situation because of the Romans and messing around with elementary doctrines was not going to make them see the error of their ways, and get “OUT” of Jerusalem.

An accurate reality check is what is required and it has to happen right “NOW”.

Time has moved on, as it is now nearing 70AD and then everything will change. But the Jews in Jerusalem are still functioning as though it is “something” BC.

Jesus Christ has come; died on the cross and fulfilled all the rituals they had been practicing for hundreds of years. While these rituals spoke of the coming Messiah and taught in precise detail what he would do, now that he has done it, any continuance of them only indicates their lack of faith.

So any further ritual designed to portray Christ’s action on the cross is a visual rejection of him and all that he did.

The Jews are totally out of touch with reality as they had rejected everything that has happened in the last 40 years.

For so long they have been faithfully carrying out the rituals, but not understanding what they taught. Now that the rituals have been fulfilled they have failed to recognise the reality because their actions were meaningless. They simply kept on killing lambs because that is what the Law demanded, with no thought there might be some reason for doing it. When Jesus came along and started fulfilling prophecies and other miraculous events, many in Jerusalem did not make the connection. Let’s hope the book of Hebrews did it.

The virgin birth was prophesied in Isaiah 7:14 with the actual event recorded in Matthew 1:23 which should have been enough for them to realise it was all about to change, but they ignored that.

The things Jesus did such as healing the sick, opening the eyes of the blind, preaching good news to the poor only confirmed he was the Son of God of whom Isaiah spoke about.

About three years of unusual events made even Nicodemus (a Pharisee) come to Jesus at night and explained that they knew he was from God, because of the things he was doing.

Everyone knew who he was, but just for the record there were two going to the village called Emmaus after Jesus’ death and resurrection. Without revealing himself he walked with them and asked them what they were discussing. “Are you the only a visitor to Jerusalem and do not know the things that have happened there in these days?” (NIV) Luke24:18b

Of course everyone knew; God was not going to let the salvation of mankind go un-noticed.

Therefore the Jews to whom Hebrews is written knew too, but they have not up-dated their thinking to stay with reality, but have continued with the ritual of crucifying the Son of God and therefore putting him to open shame.

The wages of death was paid for by Christ on the cross, he only had to do it once and the sinfulness of everyone had been dealt with this one time.

The problem for the Jews in Jerusalem is that they are behind the times and continuing to perform the ritual that teaches the reality after the reality has occurred. What they should do is understand their current situation so that a lot of other things make sense. The Romans occupy Jerusalem, the Church has taken over the responsibilities that were once theirs, and Jesus Christ has made his mark which was difficult to ignore.

Forget about baptisms and any of those other things, they are minor issues and can be dealt with later, but right now there are more important things.

Did many Jews heed the warning of the Book of Hebrews? I am sure some did, but the massacre of Jews by the Romans was horrendous.

Let’s move on 2000 years where there other very important issues facing Israel as a whole and individual Jews.

All this time the focus has been on the Church when God’s representative is considered, however all this time God has owed Israel 7 years.

When the Church took over from Israel on the Day of Pentecost straight after the death and resurrection of Jesus, it stopped the 490 year clock from ticking. In Daniel 9:24 God told Daniel he had decreed seventy “sevens” for Israel to carry out all they were to do as his representative here on earth. They were broken down into three stages;

From the time of the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuilt Jerusalem until the Anointed One the ruler there will be seven “sevens” (49 years) and sixty two “sevens” (434years). After the sixty two “sevens” the Anointed One will be cut off and have nothing.

Jesus Christ is the Anointed One and his death happened 483 years after the decree was issued for the rebuilding of Jerusalem. So we know when the 490 year clock started ticking and it stopped 483 years later, which leaves us with the fact that God still owes the Jews 7 years.

The Church took over from the Jews and has been doing their job all this time. While the Church is operating, Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of the Father while he (the Father) makes his (Jesus Christ’s) enemies a foot stool for his feet. (Psalm 110:1)

When the Father has achieved all he has to do, Jesus will rise from his right hand and come nearly down to the earth and terminate the Church by calling us all to be with him. When the Church is no more here on earth the 490 year clock ticks again and the Jews will finish the 490 years God decreed them.

1 Thessalonians 5:2 tells us that Jesus will come like a thief in the night and no one knows when that will be, so we of the Church don’t know when it will happen and neither do the Jews. However the Jew will have the responsibility of being God’s representative again for their last 7 years without any warning beforehand.

How long has the Church left to run? This only God knows; but a look at world events could suggest time is running out as Jesus enemies would seem to be losing the battle.

Just like the generation of Jews that lived or perished when the 5th stage of discipline struck in 70AD needed to understand the times they were living in and adjust their thinking to suit, so the Jews of today need to be aware that at any time they will be called upon to represent God again.

However, this time they will have a great result; but it won’t be easy.

God the Father will have stirred up the whole world as he has made the enemies of Jesus a footstool for his feet, and the Church God used as his people while he did it has disappeared. The Jews will find themselves filling in for the Church as the focus of God’s people by his enemies and it will happen at an instants notice and a total surprise.

In some way it will be a little like the time just before the Romans destroyed Jerusalem. The Jews will “not” want to worry about baptisms or acts that cause death, or any other points of trivia. They will have a hostile world to contend with.

But there is good news, for while they might have been caught off guard; God is fully aware this future generation is on the way to “glory”. They will have the pleasure of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and ushering in everlasting righteousness.

A better understanding of what will happen in these 7 years can be found in the last 3 Chapters of “From the Beginning” by the same author which can be downloaded from this website, or a hard copy will be sent free of charge by contacting me through my email address.

Just read parts of Revelation Chapter 12 where there is mentioned The Woman and the Dragon, the Beast from the Sea and another from the Land. Daniel Chapter 7 speaks of 4 Beasts, and in the same time period there is Armageddon.

The Jews are going to have their hands full and they will need to be on the ball. While I would like to consider myself as pro-Semitic as any other on the planet, but still a Gentile; I have no contact with Israel or anything Jewish.

However I know Mossad keeps a close eye on Israel’s security and I imagine all that information in Daniel Chapter 11 means a lot more to them than it does to me. But I am sure when it is really needed they will understand it.

In the beginning of Daniel Chapter 12 there is a warning of both trouble and deliverance. “At that time Michael, the great prince who protects your people, will arise. There will be a time of distress such as has not happened from the beginning of nations until then. But at that time your people – everyone whose name is found written in the book- will be delivered.” (NIV) Daniel 12: 1)
